GREENSBORO, NC- The Greensboro College Women's Basketball team defeated North Carolina Wesleyan, 71-54, on Saturday afternoon.
With missed shots from both teams for the first two minutes, The Pride started the scoring first with Vontreece Hayes making a layup. Azha McNeil kept the ball rolling by sinking a jump shot, followed by a free throw made by Joslyn Spires.
Netah Davis took back the lead for N.C. Wesleyan with a layup to make the score 6-5. From the 16 minute to the eighth minute, the Battling Bishops kept increasing their lead.
The Pride got a temporary 16-13 lead in the eighth minute when Tiffani Stephens dropped a three in the basket. Shanita Hampton followed it with a jumper for a five point lead (18-13) but from then to the end of the first half, the Battling Bishops took charge.
Going into the second half, The Pride were down 30-27. Greensboro shot 12 of 30 from field goal range and was 50% from the free throw line. Hampton led the team in points with nine with Stephens behind her with seven. Hayes grabbed six rebounds and Hampton grabbed four.
Greensboro came to the second half ready to play by taking back the lead early. Spires and Vontreece helped get the lead back with back-to-back layups. Vontreece was then fouled giving her the opportunity to make it an even bigger gap. Vontreece sank one foul shot for a 32-30 lead.
From then on Greensboro kept the lead for the 18 point win. Stephens finished the game with 13 points and four blocks. Hampton finished the game with 12 points, six assists, seven rebounds, and one block. Hayes led the team in rebounds by grabbing 12. Both Kamerin Williams and Spires grabbed six rebounds apiece.
"Myself and the coaches were very dissapointed in the first half due to lack of effort but after heated discussions, the kids turned it around. They came to the second half and played hard. They know if we play hard, we preform well," said Greensboro head coach Randy Tuggle.
The Pride travel to Methodist on Sunday, February 15 for a 2 p.m. start time.
