Pride Volleyball Takes Two On Day One of Pride Invite

The Greensboro volleyball team kicks off the Greensboro College invitational by upending Guilford College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. In the night cap the Pride defeated the Scotties of Agnes Scott 3-1.

The Pride jumped out to an early 3-0 lead behind two kills by Liz Widenhouse before the Quakers came back tying the set up at 5-5. Greensboro would get within five on two different occasions at 18-13 and 22-17 however Guilford took the set 25-17.

In the second set with the score tied 5-5, The Pride used a 5-1 run taking a 10-6 lead. Greensboro pushed the lead out to 15-8 with the help of a 5-0 run behind two kills by Megan Baranko. The Quakers cut the deficit 19-15, however the Pride closed out the set on a 6-1 push taking the set 25-16 and evening the match at 1-1.

The third set began back and forth and with Guilford within a point at 10-9, Greensboro went on a 5-0 push giving the Pride a 15-9 lead. Greensboro wouldn't not let up taking the largest lead at nine en route to a 25-16 set win, and a 2-1 match lead.

Greensboro continued their momentum into the fourth set with the score tied 2-2, the Pride went on a 7-0 run making it 9-2. Greensboro took their largest lead of the set at 13-4, before not allowing Guilford to get any closer than 19-12 before going on to win 25-18 and a 3-1 win.

After winning their first match of the day, the Pride came out in the night cap with a first set win against to Agnes Scott 25-23. The Pride fell behind early in the set 5-1 before using a five point run to pull into the lead at 7-6. Greensboro was able to contiunue holding the lead until the Scotties retook the lead in the set 23-22. Once Greensboro fell behind, they used a 3-0 closing out the set win on a Breana Baker ace 25-23.

Greensboro was once again able to take the second set of the game to take a 2-0 lead, but Agnes Scott was able to pull to within on set by taking the third set of play 25-20.

However, Greensboro was able to bounce right back with a fourth set victory 25-12, claiming the match 3-1.

Senior outside hitter Liz Widenhouse led the way for the Pride in the second match with 26 kills, while Megan Baranko was able to tally 14 kills of her own. Once again this season Bari Tressler and Darian Bolt each tallied over 20 assists in the contest.

"I am exteramly happy with the way our team played today," Pride Head Coach Kaci Pike said. "We played hard, together, and every point was a team effort"

With the two wins on the day, the Pride volleyball team improves their overall record to 4-3 on the young season. The Greensboro College volleyball team will return to action tomorrow when they host day two of the Greensboro College Volleyball Invitational.
