Pride Football Stumbles Against Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, NC—The Greensboro College football team returned to action on Saturday afternoon against the Monarchs of Methodist University. Gregory Clifton hauled in two touch downs on the day, but it was not enough as the Pride fell by a 63-35 count.

The Pride got on the first to open the game after taking the opening drive 63 yards in just eight plays to take a 7-0 lead. The drive featured a mix of the running game as well as they passing game. Warren Scott got the ball down to the Monarchs ten yard line before senior quarterback Ryan Throndset connected with Clifton from ten yards out to cap off the scoring drive.

After the Pride took the early lead Methodist was able to score 14 unawnserd points jumping out to a 14-7 lead. However, Throndset once again connected with Clifton from 20 yards out on their next drive to even the score at 14-14 after the first quarter of play.

Once again Methodist was able to pull out in front with 28 straight points taking a 42-14 lead. Greensboro College would find the promise land one last time in the first half when Scott plunged into the endzone followed by an Amilicar Martinez point after attempt to send the Pride into the half time break trailing 42-21.

The Monarchs would add to their lead following the intermission period following at  one yard touchdown run making the score 56-21. On the next possession the Pride was forced to a three and out but the Greensboro defense would get them the ball right back. Senior defensive back Micah McMaster picked off a Max Reber pass giving Greensboro the ball in Monarchs territory on the 43 yard line.

Once Greensboro got the ball back, it only took them seven plays to find the end zone to make the score 56-28. Throndset was able to complete four straight passes for 31 yards before finding Scott out of the back field from seven yards out.

In the fourth quarter of play, Greensboro College found the end zone one final time when Mac Graham picked up his first touchdown of the season from five yards out making the score 49-35. Methodist added on one final score to end the game with the 63-35 victory.

Ryan Throndset completed 27 of his 49 passing attempts for 332 yards with three touchdowns. Clifton led the receiving core on the day with ten catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns while Ray Bridges hauled in six receptions for 85 yards.

The Pride defense was anchored on the day by Micah McMaster who recorded a team high 11 tackles. Trey Daniels, Kendrick Mine, Keon Raynolds, James McClease, and Chase Sams each recorded a tackle for loss in the contest.

With the loss, the Pride's overall record falls to 1-4 overall on the season and 1-2 in USA South play. The Greensboro College football team will make their long awaited return home next week. The Pride will welcome the Scots of Maryville College to town at 1:00 PM.
