Howland and Roggow earn USA South Athletic Conference Awards

Greensboro, NC - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2022 All-Conference awards for women's soccer. Individually, Methodist's Corrine Shovlain was named Player of the Year and her coach, Bryan Madej, earned Coach of the Year honors. Rookie of the Year accolades went to Salem's Darilyn Nieto while Southern Virginia's Alyssa Trueman was named Goalkeeper of the Year. Additionally, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school who their coach felt displayed the best sportsmanship this season.

All awards are voted on by the women's soccer coach at each institution.

Shovlain, a junior forward from Fayetteville, North Carolina, becomes the seventh Methodist women's soccer student-athlete to be named USA South Player of the Year and the first since the 2006 season (Crystal Bradley). Shovlain played her best when it meant the most, against USA South foes. During those games, Shovlain led the USA South in goals with six and points with 14 to go along with two game-winning scores. Overall, Shovlain finished the regular season with 19 points on eight goals and three assists with three game-winning scores. For her efforts this season, Shovlain was named a First Team All-Conference forward.

Nieto, a first-year forward from Greensboro, North Carolina, becomes the first Salem women's soccer student-athlete to be named USA South Rookie of the Year. Nieto led all rookies in scoring during the regular season with 12 goals and 26 points. Both of those totals ranked in the top-three of all USA South players. Nieto notched two hat-tricks this season, including scoring four times against former USA South foe Agnes Scott. Nieto earned First Team All-Conference honors at the forward position while also being named USA South Rookie of the Week twice this fall.

Trueman, a senior from Raleigh, North Carolina, becomes the first Southern Virginia women's soccer student-athlete to be named USA South Goalkeeper of the Year. In 1,337 minutes played, Trueman compiled an 8-6-1 record during the regular season with a 1.08 goals-against-average and four shutouts. In Conference action-only, Trueman posted a 0.71 goals-against-average which was the lowest of those goalkeepers playing more than 450 minutes. For her efforts, Trueman was named the First Team All-Conference goalkeeper.

Madej, in his 13th year as Methodist's head coach, earns his first USA South Coach of the Year honor. This season, he led his team to the program's second consecutive USA South regular season title, the 12th in program history. Prior to these last two championships, the last Monarch team to earn a regular season crown was in 2007. Methodist compiled a perfect 9-0-0 record this fall and now has a 23-0-1 record against USA South regular season foes over the last 24 matches played. After a first round win in the USA South Tournament, the Monarchs are 14-2-1 overall which is the most wins for the program since the 2007 team finished with 17. Madej will now take his team into the semifinals of the USA South Soccer Tournament as the top-seeded team looking to capture the title for the third time in program history, the first since 2017.
