Greensboro, NC-
Kyra Tomlinson and
Destiny Vaughans of women's wrestling, as well as
Isaiah Pruett of men's basketball snag this week's Greensboro Pride Athletes of the Week designations.
Women's wrestling traveled to Georgia last weekend to participate in the NCWWC regional tournament at Emmanuel College with Tomlinson and Vaughans both finishing fourth in their respective classes, earning both a trip to the NCAA national tournament.
Tomlinson posted a 5-2 mark in the 138 pound class, with her only two losses coming against Emmanuel's Gianna Debenedetto. Vaughans would advance to the semifinals of the 207 pound class before suffering her first loss. She would rebound to take two of her final three matches of the day.
This marks the second time in program history that Greensboro has sent a pair of wrestlers to the women's national tournament, set to be held in Iowa the weekend of March 7th-8th.
Men's basketball began last week on the outside of the USA South tournament picture, but a pair of upset wins over both Brevard and Methodist lifted the Pride into the sixth and final tournament spot. As he had all season long, Pruett led the offensive charge in both contests, scoring 32 points and dishing out 10 assists against Brevard and ending the season with a 34 point performance to close out the regular season with a dramatic victory in a win-or-go-home contest against Methodist.
Pruett has had a historic senior campaign, seeing him notch his 1,500th collegiate point, 1,000th point as a member of the Pride, the sixth-highest single-season point total in Greensboro history, as well as many other top-10 entries in the program's record books. He finished the regular season 1st in the USA South in points per game (20.6), assists per game (44) and led all of D-III (and 3rd among all three levels of NCAA compeition) in minutes per game at 38:53.
Greensboro takes on Southern Virginia at 5:30 on Tuesday in the USA South Tournament semi-finals round. It marks the second consecutive season the Pride have made the postseason, and the first time they take on the Knights in postseason play since Southern Virginia joined the conference for the 2021-22 season.
