Transylvania Fall Invitational Highlights:

The Greensboro College Golf Team kicked off their fall season in impressive fashion at the Transylvania Fall Invitational Golf Tournament, held at the University Club of Kentucky. Notably, senior Andreas Huber and freshman Preston Worch both displayed their prowess by finishing in the top 5.

Preston Worch's exceptional performance earned him the prestigious titles of USA South Conference's Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week for the week of September 13th.

Coaching Excellence:

  • Head Coach Steve Johnson: Returning for a second term as head coach, as he boasts an impressive history with Greensboro College. He played a pivotal role in the early 90s, leading the team to a DIAC Conference Championship in 1992. Under his guidance, the squad qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament three consecutive years, earning him two DIAC Coach of the Year honors.

Johnson's impact extends beyond trophies; he's credited with coaching three All-Americans, including Jared Spencer, John Rogers, and Graham Andrews, who was also named National Freshman of the Year. Before his coaching career, Johnson was a member of the Pride Men's Golf Team where he played under legendary coach Jim Locke and contributed to the program's second conference championship in 1978.

  • Assistant Coach Brock Elder: A former player with an impressive playing career, Elder brings a wealth of competitive experience to the coaching staff. During his playing days, he posted a remarkable 78.5 scoring average in 20 rounds. His achievements include tying for 11th place with a +5 score at the USA South championships, winning the Ted Keller Invitational in 2008, and securing a top 10 finish at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate in 2009.

Elder continued to shine, earning Second Team All-Conference recognition. In 2009-10, he excelled further, earning GCAA All Region honors, medaling at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate, and maintaining a 74.5 scoring average. His college career culminated with an NCAA Tournament appearance and six top-ten finishes.

As a senior, Elder demonstrated his leadership by captaining the 2011 National Championship team. In the same year, he earned First Team All-American honors and graduated with a degree in Exercise Science. Post-graduation, Elder ventured into professional golf, capturing three pro wins on various mini-tours.

His passion for the game and commitment to teaching led him to begin working for Precision Golf School, where he provided individual and group lessons. In recognition of his expertise, Elder was named the Head Golf Instructor at Forest Oaks Country Club in 2020.
