Greensboro, NC – On Friday afternoon, the Greensboro College Softball team would face Mary Baldwin University in the winner's bracket of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament. Both teams were coming off of close wins, with the Fighting Squirrels getting their first post season win in program history. The game would become a pitcher's duel until the later innings, as the Pride came away with the hard-fought win to advance to Day Three, buy a score of 4-1.
Junior
Lauren Engel (Huntersville, NC) got the start on the mound for Greensboro and would get in some early trouble, as Mary Baldwin loaded the bases. However, she would not panic and was able to get out of the inning with a big strikeout, to keep the game scoreless. It would stay that way until the top of the sixth inning when Senior
Brooke Kinley (Lexington, NC) hit a single to left field, which saw Junior
Ivy Ray (Thomasville, NC) cross the plate for the first run of the game. After an error, Kinley advanced to third and then was able to score, which was followed by a Sophomore
M'Kenzie Davis (Greensboro, NC) RBI double. To round out the scoring, Senior
Kailey Walker (Eden, NC) hit a single to center field driving Davis home for the four-run lead. The Fighting Squirrels would get one back, but Greensboro was able to come away with the win, 4-1.
Offensively, the Pride were led by Walker, who finished the game 2-3 with an RBI, while, on the mound, Engel finished the complete game with three strikeouts and only five hits.
