Greensboro, N.C. - The Greensboro College Golf team wasted no time in establishing themselves as a USA South contender after this past weekend's play.
Head Golf Coach
Jim Cantamessa and his five players journeyed to Lexington, Kentucky to participate in the Transylvania Fall Invitational played at the University Club of Kentucky. The tournament featured a solid 19 teams, who were all looking for the Champ Trophy at Sunday afternoon's end.
Team wise, GC would be faced with a grueling 36-hole Saturday schedule, and after the initial eighteen would find themselves tied for 7th and eleven shots behind the leader. However, the lunch break was what the doctor ordered as the Pride went back out in the afternoon and blistered the field with a cumulative two under round and found themselves right back in the hunt as night falls and 18 to play.
As the teams returned to the University Club of Kentucky on Sunday morning for the final round, none of the Pride competitors had any idea what type of pressure GC would apply throughout the day with their impressive play. A birdie barrage started early as the Pride scorched the course with a team seven under par masterpiece as they would run away and hide from the other eighteen competitors in attendance.
Eventually when the final putt dropped, the Pride would have a sizable 14 stroke advantage over the closest competitor. Without a doubt, a signature start to the 2022-23 golf season. Obviously, it takes incredible individual performances to win college golf tournaments and the Transylvania Fall Invitational would be no exception as several Pride players shined brightly.
GC's Freshman
Andreas Huber would capture medalist honors in the tournament with three straight rounds under par. After carding one under par rounds in both Saturday eighteens, Andreas would 'Go Low" on Sunday. He would birdie five of the first six holes and follow with three pars to finish the front nine with a blistering 31 strokes. Eight pars and lone bogey on the back nine would allow Andreas to put the pencil to his scorecard in 68 strokes, which would secure the tournament's top honor by a single shot. Nothing but clutch.
While Andreas was having his phenomenal round his teammate Jzeke Dukes was on his heels registering his own 68 which featured an impressive five birdie and one bogey round. Jzeke would finish an impressive third on the field and only three strokes behind Huber.
Other important Pride performers were Zach Swink (T-18 th),
James Reilly (T-58th), and
Carson Castelli who had two subpar rounds. Following the win, Head Coach
Jim Cantamessa had these impressions. "This tournament was a wonderful start from this team. Exceptional individual play was so impressive and to see Andreas and Jzeke competing for the top spot late in Sunday's round was exciting. Our team expects to have a great season."
The Greensboro College Golf team will look to continue their winning ways as they host the Gate City Invitational on September 26th and 27th at Starmount Forest Country Club.
