Softball Falls To Berry But Tops Centre At Piedmont Classic

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Greensboro College softball team opened play at the 2018 Piedmont Classic Friday with a two-game split.

The Pride fell to the Vikings of Berry College, 4-0, before topping the Colonels of Centre College, 2-0, in the nightcap.

Game One: Berry College
The Pride was able to get runners on base in each of the first four innings, but was unable to push a run across the plate.

With the Pride and the Vikings locked up in a scoreless draw heading into the bottom half of the third inning, Berry was able to score the game's first run of the game to take a 1-0 lead.

Following the Vikings run, Greensboro was able to get a runner into scoring position again in the fifth inning but was once again unable to capitalize on the chance.

Berry then added two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to secure the victory after the Pride went down in order in the seventh.

Jasmine Worthy and Taylor Little each had one hit for the Pride, while Cheyanne Cox took the loss despite pitching her second consecutive complete game.

Game Two: Centre College
After stranding a runner in the first inning, Greensboro was able to strike first with a run in the bottom half of the third inning.

Following an Allyson Loy groundout, Melissa Garcia singled to reach base before advancing into scoring position with a stolen base.

Garcia then advanced to one base closer to home when Regan Lockwood laid down a sacrifice bunt before crossing the plate on a RBI single by Cayleigh Norton.

Greensboro was able to continue threatening in the inning, but was unable to score another run.

However, Greensboro was able to add another run to their lead in the fifth inning. Loy lead off the inning with a triple to right-center field before pushing the Pride advantage to 2-0 after crossing the plate on another Garcia sacrifice bunt.

Once the Pride established the two-run lead, sophomore pitcher Maddy Wetherholt was able to shut down the Colonels to pick up her second win of the season, while recording six strikeouts.

Jasmine Worthy, Loy, Garcia and Norton combined for Greensboro's four hits.
