Softball Sweeps William Peace

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team swept William Peace University in a USA South Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday.
 
Greensboro took Game 1, 5-0, before winning Game 2 in eight innings, 10-9.
 
"We are very pleased to get two wins today," Head Coach Teresa Fister said. "The ladies locked in and were determined every inning.
 
"I am proud of their commitment to finish every game."
 
Greensboro took a 3-0 lead in third inning following a RBI sacrifice bunt by Kaylee Johnson. Hayley Rumley scored the first run before Melissa Garcia and Johnson came in to score on a Pacers error.
 
The Pride then scored the game's final two runs in the sixth inning on a two RBI single by Rumley.
 
Rumley and Kali Puckett had a team-high two hits each, while Garcia, Johnson and Taylor Little had one hit each. Maddy Weatherholt recorded five strikeouts in the complete-game victory.
 
William Peace then jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game two before Greensboro rebounded for two runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead.
 
After the Pacers were able to tie the game in the third inning, Greensboro took a 5-3 run in the bottom half.
 
Cassie Collins hit a RBI single to right field before Puckett doubled home Rumley and Mandi Ballard.
 
Greensboro was able to extend their lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning before William Peace used a six-run fifth inning to jump in front 8-6.
 
Greensboro then battled back with one run in the sixth and seventh innings to send the game into extra innings.
 
William Peace capitalized on the free runner in the top half of the inning to take a 9-8 lead before the Pride tied the game in the bottom half off a single by Melissa Garcia.
 
Following the Garcia hit, Kaylee Johnson plated Garcia with a single to left-center field to give Greensboro the walk-off victory.
 
Garcia, Collins, Puckett, Little, and Madison Crisco had two hits each. Brittany Nozet was credited with the win after pitching 3 1/3 innings in relief of Hayley Tickle.
