GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College women's lacrosse team dropped their USA South Athletic Conference opener to Methodist University Monday, 8-6.
Methodist took an early one-goal lead before
Christina SanGiacomo took a feed from
Laine Walston to score her first goal of the season and tie the game at one.
The Monarchs then scored the next five goals to take a five-goal halftime lead.
Greensboro quickly got their second goal of the game three minutes into the second half as Lanie Walston converted on a free position attempt to pull the Pride to within 6-2.
However, Methodist struck again two minutes later to reestablish the five-goal advantage.
Following the Monarchs goal, Greensboro went on a four-goal run to pull within 8-6 but could not get any closer as Methodist stalled out for the final seven minutes to secure the win. SanGiacomo and
Peyton Joyce scored the first two goals, while
Natalie Ritchey tallied the last two goals. Walston earned an assist on Ritchey's first goal.
"We came out flat and Methodist took advantage of that," Head Coach
Christie Hebert said. "It is hard to overcome a five-goal deficit. We showed some good spurts in the second half but it just wasn't enough."
SanGiacomo and Ritchey's two goals each led the Pride, while
Kara Whitson picked up a team-high three groundballs.
Kianna Anderson took the loss in goal despite recording nine saves.
The Pride women's lacrosse team will return to action at 2 p.m. March 8 when they host Penn-State Abington. For more information on Greensboro College women's lacrosse, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
