Pride Softball Eliminated From USA South Tournament

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. --  The Greensboro College softball team's 2016 season came to a close Saturday after falling to the No. 5-seeded Panthers of Ferrum College, 7-2.

The Pride reached the match-up with the Panthers after eliminating No. 1-seeded Piedmont College, 7-6, earlier in the day.

Piedmont jumped out to a three run lead before the Pride tied the game in the third inning. Allyson Yeager plated Alexis Hall for the Pride's first run before coming in to score, along with Kali Puckett, on a single by Sarah Connolly.

Two innings later, Sarah Tompkins gave Greensboro a 7-5 lead with a long home run to dead center-field.

Greensboro maintained its lead until the Lions struck for three-runs in the seventh inning to take a narrow 6-5 lead.

After falling behind, the Lions walked Tompkins on four pitches to load the bases for Connolly who delivered the game winning hit.

Puckett had a team-high three hits, while Yeager and Connolly had two hits each. Maddy Wetherholt started for Greensboro, but did not factor into the pitching decision. Dawn Harris earned the victory after pitching one inning.

Greensboro tried to ride the momentum into Game 2, but the Panthers established a 7-0 lead and the Pride could not recover, falling by a 7-2 score.

Madison Crisco had a team-high two hits, while Courtney Bode, Yeager, and Connolly each had one hit. Harris took the loss in the circle, while Wetherholt also pitched.

"We were able to battle our way to a big win in the first game today after getting some clutch hits," Interim Head Coach Denzel Wallace said. "We did not finish where we would like to, but I am supper proud of all of the girls as they went down swinging.

The Pride finished the season with an overall record of 26-16. For more information on Greensboro College softball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
