GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College softball team returned to the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club field on Thursday afternoon. The Pride welcomed the Scots of Covenant College for a USA South Athletic Conference double header where they took the first game of the day by a 9-0 score before finishing the day with at 7-3 victory.
Greensboro was able to strike for the first runs of the game in the bottom half of the second inning. Jackie Nicholson and Haley Rumley led off the inning with a pair of singles before advancing one base each on a Scots passed ball. After Covenant retired the next two batters, Kali Puckett doubled to center field giving Greensboro a 2-0 lead.
The Pride was then able to add to their lead in the bottom half of the third inning. With one out in the inning, Allyson Yeager belted a triple to right field before being plated on a Jackie Nicholson sacrifice fly pushing the advantage to 3-0.
Later in the game, Sarah Connolly scorched a three run shot right field to add three runs to the Greensboro lead making the score 6-0. Two batters following the three run bomb by Connolly, Haley Rumley scored Allyson Yeager with another shot over the left field fence before Sarah Tompkins came in to score giving Greensboro a 9-0.
Dawn Harris then shut to Scots down in the top half of the fifth inning to secure the victory. Kali Puckett led the way for the Pride with three hits while Madison Crisco, Allyson Yeager, and Haley Rumley each added two hits apiece.
In the second game of the day, Greensboro was once again able to take an early lead in the second inning. After leading off the inning with a single through the middle, Sarah Connolly crossed the plate on a RBI ground out by Haley Rumley making the score 1-0 in favor of the home team.
Greensboro then added one more run in their next trip to the plate. Kierstin McKenna reached the base paths with a one out single before getting herself into scoring position following a stolen base. On the very next pitch, Madison Crisco singled home McKenna pushing the mark to 2-0.
One inning later after the Pride had added another run, Sarah Tompkins hit a double over the leftfielders head pushing the Greensboro lead to 5-0. After the Pride established the five run lead, Covenant then scored two runs in the top half of the fifth inning to make to score 5-2.
The Pride then got the two runs back in the sixth inning of play. Haley Rumley and Jackie Nicholson each recorded RBI singles. The Scots then got one run off the Pride's Lauren Miller but Greensboro was able to hold on for the 7-3 victory.
Shelby Drummonds picked up the win after tossing six full innings of play. Allyson Yeager collected three hits to lead the way for the Pride in game two while Sarah Connolly recorded two.
The Pride softball team will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they welcome the Lions of Piedmont College to town.
