Softball Sweeps Angels In USA South Action

RALEIGH, NC – The Greensboro College softball team (16-18, 9-9 USAS) traveled to take on the Avenging Angels of Meredith College (13-19, 7-15 USAS) in a USA South Athletic Conference double header on Tuesday afternoon. The Pride took game number one in five innings, 10-1, before taking the nightcap 11-3.

Greensboro came out of the gate swinging scoring six runs in the top half of the first inning. After scoring two quick runs, Haley Rumley and Sarah Tompkins combined to plate three more runs on two singles. Following the Tompkins single, Alexis Hall connected for the third straight single scoring Haley Rumley from third base.

After taking the 6-1 lead into the top half of the sixth inning, the Pride was add three more runs making the score 9-1. Sarah Tompkins sent a double to right field scoring Rumly and Allyson Yeager making the score 8-1 before Hall recorded another RBI single. Greensboro then added one more run in the top half of the fifth inning en route to the 10-1 victory.

The Pride raked out eleven hits in the game. Sarah Tompkins went three for three at the plate while Sarah Connolly and Alexis Hall recorded two hits apiece. Dawn Harris went the distance in the pitching circle to pick up the win. Over the course of her seven innings in the circle, Harris walked only one batter while recording one strikeout.

Greensboro was once again able to take an early lead in game two. With the score knotted at 0-0 in the top half of the second inning, Haley Rumley connected for her second home run of the season giving Greensboro a 1-0 lead.

The Pride then extended their lead to 6-0 with five runs in the visiting half of the third inning. Madison Crisco, Allyson Yeager, and Jackie Nicholson each recorded at least one RBI on two singles and a sacrifice fly ball to left field. Meredith was then able to pull to within three runs at 6-3 with three runs in the bottom half of the third inning.

Once the Angels put three runs on the board in the third inning, Greensboro continued adding on to their lead before coming away with an 11-3 victory.

Kali Puckett, Madison Crisco, Allyson Yeager, Jackie Nicholson, and Alexis Hall all recorded two hits in game two. Brittany Rush, Sarah Connolly, and Haley Rumley had one hit each. Lauren Miller picked up the win after tossing the final four innings of play. Shelby Drummonds started the game and went three innings giving up three runs.
