GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College softball team hosted their final home double header of the season on Sunday afternoon. The Pride welcomed the Scots of Maryville College to town and was able to come away with a two game split. Greensboro took the first game of the day 5-4 before falling 11-4 in game number two.
In the first game of the afternoon, Maryville was able to quickly jump out to an 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning of play.
The Scots then held the two run advantage until the Pride was able to get on the board in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Following a single by catcher Sarah Tompkins, pinch runner Evan Sherer came in to score on a Kali Puckett single cutting the deficit down to one run at 2-1. Greensboro then evened the score when Brittany Rush connected on double to right center field plating Puckett.
Once Greensboro evened the score, Maryville then regained the lead at 4-2 with two more runs in the sixth inning.
However, the Pride responded right back in the bottom half of the inning. Allyson Yeager led off the inning with a single up the middle before coming in to score on a Jackie Nicholson double to right center field. Two batters later, Tompkins placed a triple down the right field line to tie the game before scoring the go ahead run to make the score 5-4 following an Alexis Hall single.
Greensboro was then able to hold on to secure the one run victory.
Brittany Rush led the way with three hits on the day while Allyson Yeager and Sarah Tompkins each recorded two. Dawn Harris capped off the regular season while tossing her 12 complete game of the season while picking up her tenth win.
In the night cap, Greensboro fell behind big early and could not recover falling by a 11-4 score.
Sarah Connolly recorded two double and two RBIs while Allyson Yeager and Sarah Tompkins accounted for the other two. Yeager also led the way for the Pride with three hits. Shelby Drummonds took the loss after tossing the first six innings of play.
The Pride will return to the field on Friday morning when they begin play at the 2015 USA South Athletic Conference Tournament that is being held in Rocky Mount, NC. With the split on Sunday, the Pride will hold the sixth overall seed in the tournament and will take on the third seeded Panthers of Ferrum College. The first pitch of game one is set for 11:00 AM.
