Softball Splits Key USA South Series Against Piedmont

GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College softball team (19-19, 12-10 USAS) hosted Piedmont College in a USA South Athletic Conference double header on Saturday afternoon. The Pride won the first game of the day in exciting fashion, 5-4, before falling in the night cap 9-1.

In the first game of the day, Greensboro got their first two runs in the bottom half of the second inning. After Allyson Yeager reached on a fielder's choice, senior outfielder Jackie Nicholson smashed her third homerun of the season putting the Pride on top 2-0.

After retiring the Lions in the top half of the third inning, Greensboro was able to extend their margin out to 4-0 with two runs in the third inning as well. Kali Puckett led off the inning with a single to center field before coming in to score following a Sarah Connolly single making the score 3-0. Later in the inning with Nicholson at the plate, Madison Crisco scored the game's fourth running following a Lions wildpitch.

As the game progressed, Piedmont was able to come back to tie the game at 4-4 in the top half of the seventh inning setting up the exciting finish.

Kali Puckett led off the seventh inning with an infield single before moving up to second base after a perfect sacrifice bunt by Brittany Rush. Later in the inning, Sarah Connolly walked to load the bases to bring Allyson Yeager into the batter's box. On the fifth pitch of the at bat, Yeager gave the Pride the victory when she singled through the right side of the infield to score Evan Sherer.

Greensboro College collected nine hits in the first game compared to five by the Lions. Sarah Connolly and Kali Puckett both recorded two hits in the game while Allyson Yeager, Haley Rumley, and Sarah Tompkins each recorded one hit apiece.

Dawn Harris tossed the full seven innings of play. In her seven innings in the pitching circle, Harris gave up four runs while recording eight strikeouts.

In the second game of the day, Greensboro fell behind early and could not rebound falling by a 9-1 score in five innings.

Alexis Hall picked up two of Greensboro's three hits in the game while Kali Puckett recorded the other.

Shelby Drummonds took the loss in the game. Lauren Miller also pitched in the contest.

The Pride softball team will wrap up their regular season tomorrow afternoon against the Scots of Maryville College at home. The first pitch of the big USA South Athletic Conference double header is set for 1:00 PM. Prior to the start of the second game, the Pride will recognize seniors Jackie Nicholson and Shelby Drummonds.
