GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College Pride softball team got their 2015 slate underway on Wednesday afternoon as they welcomed cross town rival Guilford College. The Pride took game one of the double dip, 5-4, before falling, 18-2, in the second game.
In the home half of the second inning of game one, Sarah Connolly connected on a 3-2 pitch placing it in center field to score Kali Puckett and Jackie Nicholson giving Greensboro and early ,2-0, lead.
With the Pride on top by the two run margin, Guilford was able to pull out in front of with three unanswered runs taking a one run lead at 3-2.
However, Greensboro did not go away as they were able to plate two runs in the home half of the fifth inning to regain the lead at 4-3. Alexis Hall drove in Allyson Yeager, who led off the inning with a double, before coming in to score on a Chelsea Brewer groundout to regain the lead.
After the Quakers were able to tie the game in their next at bat, the Pride then responded with a walk off sacrifice fly by Haley Rumley to cap of the 5-4 victory.
Lauren Miller (1-0) picked up the win after tossing the final inning of play. Dawn Harris started the game for Greensboro but did not factor into the decision completing six innings while recording two strikeouts.
Kali Puckett, Chelsea Brewer, and Jackie Nicholson each accounted for two hits each in game one.
The second game of the day proved to be all Guilford College. After falling in the second game to the Pride, the Quakers came back to take game two 18-2.
Shelby Drummonds took the loss in the pitching circle for the Pride.
"The first game was a real good game for us at the plate and in the field," First Year Coach Becky Bishop said following the games. "Our girls really showed me that they can overcome adversity and fight back to win game. We also have to take the second game today as a learning lesson, and move on as we get set to play again on Saturday."
With the two game split, the Pride softball team opens their season with a 1-1 overall mark. Greensboro will be back in action this Saturday when they are slated to take on the Wildcats of Randolph College. The first pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM.
