Greensboro split a USA South tri-match at North Carolina Wesleyan on Friday night. The Pride opened the night with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 25-19) win over Mary Baldwin before falling to the host Battling Bishops 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-21).
Greensboro got the night started right with a 3-0 win over Mary Baldwin. The Pride led by as many as 12 points in the first set en route to a 25-13 decision. Greensboro raced out to a 19-3 lead in the second set and cruised home for the 25-8 final.
Mary Baldwin hung close in the final set but could not hold off a late run as The Pride earned the decisive win at 25-19.
Liz Widenhouse notched a team high nine kills. Megan Smith and Megan Baranko each recorded seven with Morgan Hooks contributing six. Cortland Phillips had 31 assists for the match and Danielle Simpson led the defense with 17 digs.
Against North Carolina Wesleyan in the night cap, The Pride fell behind 1-0 with a 25-13 set one defeat. The Pride led by as many as six points in set two and were a point away from evening the match at 1-1 before Battling Bishops rallied for a 26-24 win.
Greensboro fell behind by as many as five points in the third set, but fought back to within one point at 19-18 and 20-19. Wesleyan responded with four consecutive points and eventually closed out the match with a 25-21 victory.
Olivia Gough paced the offensive attack with 11 kills with Phillips serving up 29 assists. Phillips and Widenhouse each contributed two service aces.
Simpson posted a team high 12 digs on the defensive end. Widenhouse added 11 while Phillips posted ten.
The Pride are now 10-9 on the season and 1-4 in the conference. Greensboro will be back at home on Wednesday for its Dig Pink match against Ferrum. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Hanes Gym.
