Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Meredith for 12-7 Win

The Pride women's lacrosse team (2-8 overall, 2-1 USA South) took a 5-3 lead at the half and held off Meredith (4-5 overall, 3-3 USA South) for a 12-7 road victory on Wednesday.

Brittany Ziobro started the scoring with an unassisted goal to put Greensboro ahead 1-0 at the 27:36 mark.  The Avenging Angels battled back with two quick scores to take a 2-1 advantage.

The Pride put the next four goals on the board to regain the lead at 5-2, beginning with the tying score by Kayla Gonzalez with 24:13 on the clock.  Ziobro dished out the assist and contributed another to Kirstin Norris for a 3-2 lead with 14:09 to go in the half.

Gonzalez got on the board again with a free position goal with 11:41 left and Norris scored her second goal of the half on an assist from Nadya Fedun with 7:29 remaining.  

Meredith would tack on a goal late to make the score 5-3 in favor Greensboro at the half.

Norris, Ziobro and Gonzalez were back at it again in the second, putting up the first three goals around an Avenging Angel score to extend the lead to 8-4.

Meredith hung around, putting up three of the next four - with Ziobro adding the lone goal of the stretch for The Pride - to draw within 9-7 with 12:37 to go in the game.

Greensboro would take control from there, with Norris scoring twice and Ziobro once down the stretch to ice the 12-7 victory.

The Pride outshot the Avenging Angels 20-18 and picked up 13 ground balls compared to ten for Meredith.  Both teams committed ten turnovers and won ten draw controls each.

Norris led Greensboro with five goals and an assist, while Ziobro added four goals and three assists.  Gonzalez capped the scoring with three goals on the day.  Fedun contributed to the attack as well, with two assists.

Defensively, Gonzalez had a team best four ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers.  Kaleigh Hemstock recorded the win in goal with a complete game, nine save effort.

Next up for The Pride is a trip to Piedmont on Saturday for an 11 a.m. start.
