Men's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to #3 Salisbury
The Pride men's lacrosse team (0-1 overall) fell to two-time defending National Champion and #3 Salisbury (1-0 overall) on the road Sunday 17-3.
Greensboro took it to the Seagulls early with an unassisted goal by Scott Showalter 1:15 into the contest. Salisbury responded with a man-up goal at the 10:15 mark to even the score.
Both defenses held tough until the Seagulls found goal again with 4:54 left in the first frame. Salisbury added three more goals down the stretch to take a 5-1 lead after one period of play.
The second period was dominated by defense, with the Seagulls putting up the lone goal with 10:08 remaining in the half.
Salisbury added to the lead early in the second half with two quick goals in the first 2:21. Jaeger Carlyle got The Pride back on the board with 7:38 showing on the third period clock with an unassisted score to cut the margin to 8-2.
The Seagulls took the momentum from there, finishing out the period with five unanswered goals to grab a 13-2 lead heading into the final frame.
Greensboro added one goal in the fourth, with Nick Lusardi finding Charles Stringfellow for a goal. The Pride were unable to make a final push though, as Salisbury outscored The Pride 4-1 in the period to finish out the 17-3 win.
The Seagulls held a 57-29 advantage in total shots on goal with a 33-22 margin coming on goal. Salisbury also picked up 54 ground balls compared to 24 for Greensboro and won 18 of the 24 face offs.
The Pride converted 21 of their 27 clear attempts and forced 24 Seagull turnovers.
Carlyle led Greensboro with four shots on goal, while Schowalter added three. Tracey Armstrong caused a team leading three Salisbury turnovers. Mitchell Kanowicz suffered the loss despite making 18 saves.
The Pirde will make their home debut at Pride Field on Friday against Colorado College. The contest is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
