Baseball Falls Short at Christopher Newport, 9-6
A big fifth inning sparked Christopher Newport past the Pride baseball team on Saturday, 9-6. Greensboro had rallied to knot the game at 3-3 in the fourth, before the Captains exploded for six runs in the fifth.
Christopher Newport struck first with three runs in the bottom of the second. Austin Catherina got the comeback started for The Pride in the fourth with a lead-off single up the middle. After Matthew Parker reached on an error, James Feldmann bunt singled to load the bases.
Steven Pfeiffer drew a walk to score Catherina for the first run of the game for Greensboro. Seth Caison followed one batter later with a sacrifice fly that scored Parker. Feldmann scored the final run of the frame, racing home on a muffed throw by the third baseman.
The Captains responded in the fifth, putting six runs on the board to grab a 9-3 lead. The Pride chipped away at the margin, with two RBI singles in the sixth and a run scoring double by Caison in the seventh, but would not come closer than the final margin of 9-6.
Greensboro outhit Christopher Newport, 9-7, but committed three errors compared to two for the Captains.
The Pride are now 7-4 on the season and will look to even the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at Christopher Newport.
